Edible Ikebana Workshop by Mess Hall

Edible Ikebana Workshop by Mess Hall

Ikebana is having a moment, but the simplistic form of floral arrangement dates back to 7th century Japan. Once an offering at alters, the core of the art is to respect each flower or plant chosen for its inimitable quality, character and purpose. Mess Hall’s edible ikebana follows the same philosophy. Every element of our arrangements are carefully chosen at local farmers markets and specialty food shops. Even down to the vessel it’s displayed in, allowing the eater to enjoy their arrangement long after it’s been devoured.

At this 2 hour workshop, attendees will learn the how-tos of sourcing, how to manipulate ingredients into different shapes and finally how to arrange their very own edible ikebana. Each attendee will be provided with tools, materials and a vintage vessel sourced by Tavatine.

——-
Mess Hall is a food based creative studio. In addition to their namesake journal they collaborate with artists on food-based projects, provide styling services and curate a marketplace of vintage cookware.

Tate Obayashi is the editor of Mess Hall Journal. When not working on the journal, she creates custom sculptures for Bergdorf Goodman, Tiffany & Co. and ABC Carpet to name a few. Edible ikebana is a nod to her Japanese heritage as well as her creative and culinary endeavors.

WELCOME TO WEAVING: MEDITATIVE WEAVING BASICS Workshop by Rachel Snack

WELCOME TO WEAVING: MEDITATIVE WEAVING BASICS Workshop by Rachel Snack

This workshop is a mini textile retreat, for those who wish to learn the craft of weaving in an inspiring and thoughtful setting. Instructor Rachel Snack approaches weaving as a meditative process, and during this 3-hr weaving workshop students will learn the basics of weaving on a frame loom and the history of the art form in a conscious learning environment. The practice of weaving is slow, mindful and repetitive, and when this process is embraced it can be relaxing for the mind and body — even therapeutic.

Along with the weaving steps, students will also learn about different yarns and their uses, finishing techniques (how to complete your weaving after it’s taken off the loom) and ideas for future textile designs. Most students will walk away with a finished weaving – a piece of wall art, a pillow decoration or woven accessory – but this is not necessary as all students will be able to keep their looms, weaving supplies and fiber for future projects. Beautifully crafted looms and quality yarns will be selected for this class to guarantee all projects created are made to last. This workshop also includes light snacks and refreshments.

About the Instructor:

Rachel Snack is a weaver, textile artist and conservator. Rachel is the founder of Weaver House, a textile studio dedicated to preserving craft tradition through hand-making and weaving education. She received her Bachelor of Fine Art in Fiber & Material Studies at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago, and her Master of Science in Textile Design at Philadelphia University. She has exhibited her work internationally, and taught courses on weaving, fiber dyeing and textile conservation throughout the United States. You can view her fine art textile work here.

The fine print:

All materials are included in the ticket price and participants will take home their loom + weaving supplies, along with a generous amount of fiber. All ticket sales are final, however can be transferred — if you can no longer attend a class you may gift your ticket to a friend. Please inform us ahead of time by emailing weaverhouseco@gmail.com. Although rare, we reserve the right to cancel this workshop and refund ticket sales for any reason.
